Frequently Asked Questions
Does VPN Tracker support virtual machines (VMs)?
Yes. In most cases, virtual machines work with VPN Tracker automatically, without any additional configuration.
When VPN Tracker establishes a VPN tunnel on your Mac, VM guest systems (for example Windows or Linux) can access remote company networks, as long as the VM uses the default NAT-based network mode (often called “Shared Networking” or simply “NAT”).
UTM is an exception. It requires additional NAT rules. VPN Tracker can configure these rules automatically.
General Recommendation
In your VM, use the default NAT network mode, such as:
- “NAT”
- “Shared Networking”
- “Shared with Host”
The following network modes will not work:
- “Bridged”
- “Host-Only”
Supported Virtualization Solutions
- VMware Fusion: Network type: NAT (Shared)
- VirtualBox: Network type: NAT
- QEMU: Network type:
-netdev user(userspace NAT) - Docker: Default bridge (
docker0) - UTM: UTM uses “Shared Networking (NAT)” by default. To allow VM guests to access remote networks through VPN Tracker, additional NAT rules on the Mac are required.
How to Enable UTM Support
- Open VPN Tracker.
- Open Preferences.
- Enable the option “Set NAT rules for UTM VM access”.
- By default, the network 192.168.64.0/24 is used. In almost all cases, this setting does not need to be changed.
VPN Tracker will automatically configure the required rules. After that, UTM VMs can access remote VPN networks just like other virtual machines.
